For the third consecutive year, Wessington Cryogenics have taken part in Entrepreneurial Scotland’s Saltire Scholars Programme. The programme brings us three interns that will spend the summer embarking on exciting individual projects and participating in professional development opportunities, all with the support and guidance of our exceptional team.
As our interns are coming to the end of their time with us, we’re excited to share what they have been up to!
Rachel Brown, our systems Intern, has been working on the development of our HR presence and processes by designing, creating and coding the HR Hub – An online portal which will be the focal point of our HR department. It will be a landing site for new starters to upload their new starter information, have a dedicated policies page for all staff to access, display power-app fuelled metrics describing the monthly progression of output compared to targets, as well as up-to-date news postings and information for retirees.
The development of the HR Hub will cut down on lengthy administration tasks related to new starters and allow staff to have full-time access to policies rather than having to request the information. It will also keep staff up to date on the company’s output of goods, and how this correlates to the quarterly bonus scheme. Having a dedicated page to share news like work anniversaries, events and charitable causes will promote a team mentality between the office and the shop floor.
This exciting project will require the development of software and systems skills, which are integral to modern day society. The intern will receive support and training for power apps like Power BI, the programming language SQL and software including SharePoint. Wessington’s varied workforce will be at hand to provide training with Human Resources, sales, marketing and infrastructure.
Chloe McKinlay and Karolina Mszanik, our Engineering Interns, have spent the last 12 weeks creating and implementing an Engineering Change Order System. They have created a functioning GUI that can search multiple servers and databases to retrieve the required information for the engineering department. Through this project, they enhanced their coding, problem-solving, and teamwork skills, preparing them for the professional world and ensuring the project was completed to a high standard.
The project will significantly impact the engineering department’s operations, motivating Chloe and Karolina to achieve the best outcomes for the company while enjoying the challenge. The investment from their supervisors in developing their skills, both in and outside of work, has been greatly appreciated. At the start of the internship, in-depth personality analyses were conducted to facilitate effective teamwork.
During their time at Wessington, our interns each had exciting opportunities to network with women in engineering. They attended the Chamber Business Awards at the Glasshouse, toured labs and workshops at Parker Hannifin, and visited PD Ports, which included a boat ride along the river. Their experience at Wessington has been transformative, equipping them with valuable skills and insights that will benefit their future careers.
